August 30th, 1914 – January 11th, 2015
It is with deepest sadness that we announce the very peaceful passing of our dear mother, Jean Dorothy Higgins, on Sunday, January 11th, 2015. Jean was the oldest of eleven children born to Grace Elizabeth (Powell) Garrison and Alfred Lowell Garrison, on August 30th, 1914, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She was predeceased by her dear son, Denis Michael Higgins, in June of 1970, and by her loving husband, Patrick Joseph Higgins, in October of 1996. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, great-aunt, cousin, and friend. Jean was always full of life. She loved to knit and sew and was known by all of her family to give the best hugs whenever they came to visit. She loved any new baby that was born into the family and was known for the beautiful baby sweaters she would make for them. Jean is survived by her children Sandra Hinds, Alan (Barbara) Higgins, Patrick (Lois) Higgins and Grace (Rod Farmer) Higgins, her six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
A Prayer Service will be held at McCall Bros., 1400 Vancouver Street, Victoria, B.C. at 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on January 19th, 2015. A Celebration of Life and Tea will be held at 2 p.m. on January 20th, 2015, also at McCall Bros.
The family would especially like to thank the nursing staff on the Third Floor East of Luther Court for all the gentle, loving, kind, and compassionate care you all gave our dear mother during her residence there. We will be eternally grateful.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Canadian Lung Association.

Marion Holland My condolences to you all – she had a wonderful life – my thoughts are with you all
We had the very great pleasure of living next door for around 20 years from 1983 to 2004. Jean and Pat were wonderful neighbours, so loving towards the 3 of us, The boys called Jean “Grandma” as she said that was what she was! They still call her that today when we are thinking of her.
We had many conversations over the fence and Jean would always try to get me to trim the hedge. Wish I had done so more often for her. I will never forget New Years in 2000 when my boys had a party and it was way too large and I am sure the noise did too. I was away but heard about it when I came home. When I asked Jean if she thought of calling the police she just said “No, that was Adam and Kev and she couldn’t do that to them” . Apparently it wasn’t out of control, just loud! She was the best neighbor one could have.
My thoughts are with all of you this day, now she is with Pat once more.
With love, Jan O’Neill
