HENRY JOHN HERBERT OLDFIELD

Herb was born on Oldfield Road in Saanich on June 4, 1914, the eldest son of Clarence and Doris Oldfield, living and working on the Oldfield Ranch for 25 years A member of St Michaels Church, he worked with the Youth Movement up and down the Island, finally leaving the farm to join the ministry, graduating with Honours in Philosophy and Psychology and an L th. in Theology from the Anglican Theological College. His ministry began in Manitoba in a small parish with ten churches. In Manitoba he met and married Mary Charlotte McGuinness, and with twin sons, John and Fred began a life filled with music and ministry, taking them around the world to churches small and large, to end at St Stephen’s, Church, Burnaby. There Mary died in 1972, Herb retiring in 1979 to his Island home, developing a Chaplaincy at Saanich Peninsula Hospital; and reconnecting with churches of his early days. Young People were his great interest, serving for thirty years at Camp Artaban on Gambier Island. Herb served as Vice-President of the Canadian Red Cross in Chilliwack, Princeton and New Westminster, as President of the New Westminster and District Society for the Mentally Challenged, Chairman of the Coquitlam United Way, President of the , Burquitlam Lions Club, secretary of Central Saanich Lions and member of the Malahat Lions Club.
