HOSTY, (Brigadier) William Born October 21, 1917 in Portsmouth. Promoted to Glory April 4, 2005. He leaves to celebrate his life daughters Pauline (Rudi), Joan and Carollee, grandchildren Russel, Dawne, Philip and Heidi, five great-grandchildren and so many whom he influenced to seek Christ through the ministry of his music. Bill was commissioned a Salvation Army officer in 1939, married Freda in 1942 and moved with the family to Canada in 1954. They held various appointments with the Salvation Army across Canada. During this period, several honours were bestowed on him: Citizen of the Year by the B’nai B’rith Alberta Lodge, President of the Council of Churches, Edmonton, and honorary canon of the Anglican Church. Their final appointment was as administrators of the Salvation Army Matson Lodge before retiring in 1982. An able cornetist, Bill was a member of the Rosehill and International Staff Bands in England, and the Canadian Staff Band in Canada. He was also a very gifted artist. Widely travelled, a visit to Zimbabwe left him with a deep concern for the needs of the people there. Special thanks to Dr. Wolovitz, and the staff of Ashgrove Wing, The Priory for their compassion. A celebration of his life will be held at the Salvation Army Victoria Citadel, 4030 Douglas Street (off Mackenzie) on Sunday, May 1 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Athol Evans Hospital, Harare, Zimbabwe c/o The Salvation Army, 2 Overlea Blvd, Toronto Ontario M4H IP4.
