Adam Leuchter (born Roman Adam Leuchter) died peacefully and with grace and dignity on Saturday morning Oct 5th, 2024. With a view of the ocean and a pleasant breeze his spirit was freed as he was comforted by loved ones. Adam was born on January 29, 1925, in Krakow, Poland.Adam was predeceased by his loving wife Vera (nee Eagleton) in 1992 and his son Christopher in 1997. He is survived by his daughter Sue and son Andrew and grandkids Sofia and Evann.

The life journey Adam lived was remarkable. Having lost his Father to war at the very beginning of WW2, the remaining members of his family and close relatives found themselves in a Russian labor camp. When the gates were opened after Hitler opened a new front against Stalin, his family were able to find their way to Persia. Soon after young Adam enlisted to fight for freedom. He trained in Scotland before landing post D-Day in the famous Polish First Armoured Division, commanded by General Maczek. Indeed, he would serve throughout his campaign as the radio operator in Maczek’s tank. The division was instrumental in the liberation of France and Holland including the closing of the Falaise pocket. His greatest memory of the war was the smiles and warmth of the Dutch citizens after they liberated the city of Breda.

After the war Adam studied in Edinburgh and graduated as an Engineer. It was after he moved to Northern England to work for ICI that he met a lovely English girl, Vera, and fell in love. Their adventurous spirit led them to emigrate to Canada in 1954 where they eventually settled in Montreal. Adam was a hard worker, rising through the ranks of CIL industries where he remained until his retirement in 1990. Along with his work ethic Adam was extremely well liked by his colleagues and appreciated for his wonderful dry sense of humor and his humanity.

Adam and Vera raised their three kids, Sue, Chris and Andrew in Pointe Claire on the West Island of Montreal. It was an idyllic time of summers at the outdoor pool, neighbourhood barbecues, skiing in the Laurentians and summer holidays taken in the family Volkswagen beetles. Adam was an automobile enthusiast and was always tinkering with a British sports car.
After Vera sadly passed away from a struggle with cancer, Adam eventually made the move in 1995 to Victoria, BC. He brought his beloved dog Patches with him, who was to enjoy his lovely backyard in Ten Mile Point. Adam became a consummate walker and hiker, a passion he shared with Brenda Freeman, who became his partner in life and companion for many fabulous walking holidays in different parts of the world.

A gentle soul. Intellectual. Lover of the Arts. Generous to a fault. Adam lived a rich life and went out on his terms. Courageous and selfless, he will be dearly missed and never forgotten.

A celebration of Adam’s life will be scheduled at a later date.

Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the charity of your choice. Some of Adam’s favorites were Red Cross, BC Knowledge Network and Doctors without Borders.
