It is with deep sadness and much love that we say goodbye to our beloved Wife, Mother and “Nanny”, Mary Caffrey. Mary passed away peacefully at the age of 81 years on October 3, 2024. In her final days Mary was comforted by her devoted husband, children and grandchildren.

Mary will be forever remembered by her husband of 58 years Mike, and her four children; Jennifer, Maria, Darren (Claire), and Diana (Dom), and eight grandchildren; Jacob, Kaelyn, Christina, James, Mia, Liam, Cillian and Damien; and brother Anthony (Maureen). Mary also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and cousins who adored her.

She was predeceased by her parents, John and Delia Durkin; and her beloved brother, Johnny Durkin.

Mary was born and grew up in Yorkshire, England. Prior to immigrating to Canada Mary also lived in New Zealand. During her life in Canada Mary lived in Edmonton and Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta before moving to Victoria, British Columbia in 2022.

Mary’s greatest love was her family and she devoted her life to them. Mary also worked as a Payroll Clerk and retired from her long career at the age of 55 from Edmonton Public Schools where she was highly respected by her colleagues. During her retirement Mary was passionate about gardening and took great pride in creating her lovely rockery.

Mary was a very special lady and will be missed by her family and friends all over the world. She will be remembered for her loving heart, beautiful smile, selfless spirit, great sense of humour and gentle soul.

The family would like to recognize and thank the team of incredible professionals at Victoria General Hospital that cared for her during her last days. They would also like to thank the dedicated, caring team of professionals at Luther Court Community Health Centre and the home care team that provided care for her during her last years.

A visitation will be held on October 19, 2024, between 10:00 am and 11:00 am at St. Joseph The Worker Parish, 753 Burnside Road West, Victoria, BC, V8Z 1M9. The Funeral Mass will follow the Visitation at 11:00 am with Father Alfredo officiating .

Mary was a special lady, opening her home to us many times as we came to know her. My memories of Mary with her unique qualities of kindness and amazing smile would know we were welcomed. Mary would make special meals when we all came together, especially potato cakes. To her family who watched over her and took loving care the last few years, bless you.
