With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Dick Chin on July 7, 2024, at the age of 91.
Dick was born in Taishan county in Guangdong, China, the only son of Chin Nee Young. Dick came to Canada in 1950 at the age of 17 with his stepmother to join his father. After a year in Bamfield, BC, they relocated to Victoria, BC, where he went to night school to learn English. As a teenager, he helped his family establish themselves in Canada while juggling school, work, family, and community.
Dick was an incredibly hard worker and a fast learner. Throughout his long work history, Dick often held multiple jobs at a time to provide for his family, including operating his own grocery store. Places he worked include Hotel Douglas, the Empress Hotel, Kennametal, Tudor House Pub, and BC Ferries. After 15 years at the Swartz Bay terminal, his favorite job, in which he enjoyed a special camaraderie with coworkers, Dick retired in 1998.
Dick had a natural charisma and a quirky sense of humor. With his signature wave, smile, and greeting, he made an impression on all those he met. He liked watching hockey, basketball, playing tennis, and especially loved his weekly coffee get-togethers with friends and colleagues. Along with his wife Joyce, Dick was very active in the church community, through which he formed strong life-long friendships. He was always quick and ready to lend a helping hand to family, friends, coworkers, and community.
His greatest love was for his family. Dick will be deeply missed as a dedicated and beloved husband to Joyce, father to Jack (Anna) and Lana, grandfather to Conrad and Ella, brother to Grace, uncle to many nephews and nieces, and a good friend to many.
Rest in peace. You will forever be in our hearts.
A service will be held on Sunday, July 14, at 2:30 PM, in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria, BC. Flowers are gratefully declined. If you wish to, donations in Dick’s memory can be made to the Victoria Chinese Alliance Church.
