“With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Mahinda Senanayake Liyanage on July 5th, 2024.  Mahinda was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, who left behind a legacy of unwavering love, kindness, and dedication.

Mahinda was born near Galle in Sri Lanka on April 11th, 1947.  After graduating, he moved to Colombo, where he worked for the State Engineering Corporation and met and married Susila.  Together they raised two daughters, Niranjala and Subodha.  Fifteen years ago, he and Susila followed their daughters to Victoria, Canada, where he continued to work until a few years ago.

He was a man of gentle spirit and quiet strength. He lived his life with an open heart, always ready to extend a helping hand to those in need. His generosity and selflessness were hallmarks of his character, and his ability to “roll up his sleeves” and tackle any task without seeking recognition was truly remarkable.

A devoted family man, he poured his love into his family, making each moment spent together a cherished memory. Whether it was sharing a laugh, offering wise counsel, or simply being present, he made everyone feel valued and loved. He had a unique ability to make time for everyone, listening with genuine interest and offering support whenever it was needed. He leaves behind a family who adored him and countless friends who were touched by his generosity and kindness. His spirit lives on in the hearts of all who knew him.

He is survived by his loving wife, Susila, by his daughters Niranjala and Subodha and their spouses Udo and Brian, and by his granddaughter Jasmyne.  He is also survived by his sisters Chandralatha and Anula and by his brothers Ananda and Anura and by their families, all who will miss him dearly.

The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the medical staff who supported our father in his battle against cancer including Doctors Paul Kachan, Joanna Vergidis, Jeffrey McCracken, Akhil Chopa and Howard Pai.  Our heartfelt thanks also to the nurses and staff at the Fernwood Community Health Clinic, the BC Cancer Agency, and the nurses and physicians at the Royal Jubilee Hospital’s 5 South Ward for the dedication and the kindness they showed our father during his final days.

Rest in peace dear Mahinda (Thatta). Your gentle spirit and boundless love will forever remain in our hearts.”
