Our cherished Biji left us on February 1, 2024. Born in Wadala Sandhuan, Sialkot, British India, to Risaldar Dileep Singh and Lashman Kaur Sandhu, Biji spoke fondly of her childhood, reminiscing about her ancestral haveli, seven siblings, and father’s military stature, plus classic afternoon tea and trips to nearby Lahore. After partition, she was raised by her eldest sister at Majhola farm, Pilibhit, UP. She settled in Gajugazi, Gurdaspur, PB, upon her marriage to Hardial Singh Gill, becoming mother to three sons and three daughters.
In 1984, Biji arrived with her husband in Victoria, BC. After his passing in 1995 she remained here with her two youngest daughters. Her grandchildren treasured her. She watched over us, guided us through life’s hurdles, celebrated our small accomplishments, and instilled values of selflessness, benevolence, humility, and compassion. Many in the community looked to Biji as a mother figure.
Predeceased by her parents, siblings, husband, sons Sawinderjit and Inderjit, and youngest beloved daughter Harpreet, Biji leaves behind her daughters-in-law Surinder and Harwinder; son-in-law Sukhdev Randhawa; son Ranjeet (Jagdish); daughters Jaspal (Beant Warraich) and Chandan (Manjit Dhariwal); grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and countless others she touched. She is also survived by her favourite houseplants: their offshoots flourish as gifts in the homes of all her loved ones.
Biji’s funeral will be held on February 10, 2024 at 11:00 am at McCall Gardens (4665 Falaise Dr) followed by Antim Ardaas at Gurdwara Sahib, Khalsa Diwan Society (1210 Topaz Ave). In lieu of flowers, please support the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
