With heavy hearts we announce that dear Mike (son, brother, father, friend) passed away on Wednesday, June 21st, 2023 at the Victoria General Hospital, surrounded by family and friends.

Born in Vancouver on Sunday, June 9th, 1968, to Beth and Hugh, Mike was a delightful whirlwind and perfect joy.  Mike lived with a severe brain injury, acquired at age five, and showed great courage, strength, and determination, living his life outside the lines, on his own terms.

Mike was a gentle man with a big heart, a cheeky sense of humour, and a twinkle in his eye.  Mike’s kindness and calmness touched the lives of those who knew him.

Mike is predeceased by grandparents Max and Ruth Guthrie, Waldo and Helen Skillings, his aunt May, and uncle Waldo.  He is survived by his parents Beth (Michael) and Hugh, his sister Elizabeth (Chris), his sons Gabriel (Dalainee) and Anthony (Kellsy), grandchildren Lenci, Neci, Greyson and Benjamin.

The family is thankful to Island Health Brain Injury Program, and especially Rebecca, who became Mike’s home support worker in May 2023.  Rebecca’s presence in Mike’s life was a game changer, and we deeply appreciate the care and compassion she provided in his last 6 weeks.

Family and friends gathered on June 28, 2023, to celebrate Mike’s life.  We feel grateful to have been together, and send love and healing to those who could not be with us in person. For those who wish to watch a recording of the service, please click on the image below.
