Don died peacefully at his “home” at Mount St. Mary hospital. He was predeceased by his wife Verleen (nee Johnston). Don is survived by his children Dawn, Rick, Robb and Virginia who all live in the Maritimes, his sister, Maureen Birklein, and his brother Terry (Elizabeth), who has been his primary caregiver and companion.
Don joined the RCAF in 1954 in Calgary, Alberta. He served in many capacities until his retirement in 1976 including as an Observer on the Tracker aircraft and a Warrant Officer in the Junior Leadership Training School. He and his family were posted to many RCAF bases across Canada as well as Lahr, Germany for 2 years. After retiring from the service, he worked in Insurance and the food service industry before returning to the Air Force where he worked as a civilian. Don was an avid lover of sport and the outdoors which he shared with his children. Don developed Alzheimer’s and in 2014 he moved to Victoria to be closer to his brother and family on the west coast. Don retained his happy disposition throughout, continuing to enjoy singing and taking long walks with his beloved brother, Terry. He spent several happy years at Rose Manor until his needs required him to move to Mount St. Mary hospital in 2020 where he received exemplary care until his passing.
A heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff at Rose Manor and Mount St. Mary where Don was loved, cared for and supported during his progress through the disease. No service by request. A celebration of Don’s life will be held in the summer with his family in Victoria and the Maritimes.
