Kwok Poy Louie passed away peacefully on November 21, 2022 at Victoria’s Chinatown Seniors Care. He is survived by his wife, Judy Shuk-Yin Louie of 55 years, 4 children, Victor (Lisa), Ken, Gerry (Cathy) and Angela (Felix) and five grandchildren, Alyse, Tyler, Kayla, Felice and Mia.
Kwok Poy Louie was born in Canton, China on January 16th, 1937. He arrived in Vancouver, BC by boat with his grandfather and uncle in 1952 at the age of 15 to start a new life and to escape communism. He worked tirelessly in many different labour jobs to survive in Canada and faced racism and prejudices. He paved the way for new generations of Chinese to come to Canada. He worked many different jobs in farming and restaurants to survive. Eventually moving over to Oak Crest Foods as a butcher and then transiting to Louie’s Family Foods as butcher and eventually working in produce until his retirement.
Eventually, he immigrated his brother and mother over from China for them to have a better life. He moved to Victoria, BC in 1954 and married his wife, Judy. They had 4 children shortly after, 3 boys and 1 girl. The children have fond memories of our 1000 square foot house at Wesley Place where it housed 6 people and my mom’s additional family members who immigrated to Canada to start new lives. It was crowded but it provided a roof over our heads. As a previous farmer, the house had a large yard with 5 fruit trees and a huge garden full of Chinese vegetables.
During retirement his health gradually declined due to Alzheimer’s disease and eventually a stroke. Ken, his second son and most favored son, cared for him tirelessly during his stay at Chinatown Seniors home visiting him at least once a week to keep him company and take care of his immediate needs. Ken will miss him the most as they shared a bond.
We sincerely thank Chinatown Senior Care Home for their services and all health care professionals involved in caring for Kwok Poy Louie.
Service will be held in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria, BC on Monday, November 28, 2022 at 1:00 pm.

I have known Mr. Kwok Poy Louie’s children, Ken, Victor, Gerry, and Angela since I have arrived in Victoria from China, back in 1980’s. Me and Gerry went to the same schools. And we were best friends since the 1990’s. We went to many parties, fishing, and swimming at Oak Bay Rec. I have found memories of visiting the Lourie family at their Home. They have a great family. My sincere condolences to them. May Mr. Lourie Rest in Peace in Heaven.
