It is with heavy hearts that the family of Joyce (Jo) Mawdsley announces her passing at Saanich Peninsula Hospital on Tuesday, November 02, 2022.
Jo was born in Toronto, Ontario, to Charles and Marjorie Moreland. She grew up with 2 sisters, Anne and Lynne. She was married in 1958 to Duane Sawatsky, settled in Victoria BC and had 4 children, Katherine, Stephen, Michael and Kirsten.
When her marriage to Duane ended, Jo devoted the next part of her life raising her children on her own. As the children grew up, Jo found she had a love for barbershop singing and spent many years with the Victoria chapter of Sweet Adelines, competing in chorus competitions many times, gaining many medals and even earning a gold medal which led the chorus to take part in an International chorus competition in Indianapolis in the 1990’s.
Jo met and married Allan Mawdsley in 1997 who fit right in to her tight knit family. They enjoyed travelling together to many places over the years, and Al too, shared a love for singing.
Jo’s greatest pleasure was her family and she is survived by Allan, 3 of her children, Steve (Lisa), Mike (Vera), Kirsten (Ben), 7 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, all of whom she was greatly proud. She touched many lives and the friends she had stayed close over the years. Her dear friend Wendy who remained by her side right to the end was a treasure to her.
A Celebration of Jo’s Life was held in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria B.C., on Monday November 14th, 2022 at 2pm.

Ted & Gayla Strong
Dear Ben, Kirsten, and all your Family; we had met Jo on several occasions but did not know her well. It was lovely, watching the video of her memorial service and getting a glimpse of her life. We wanted you to know how very sorry we are for your loss. No doubt you will miss her presence deeply but how fortunate, you have such a rich treasury of precious memories. Please know that Jo had been in our prayers, and all of you as well, who, will remain so. May the Father of mercies, and The God of all comfort, comfort you all. With our love in Christ….Ted & Gayla Strong (Adam’s parents)
