It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Barbara ‘Barbie’ Jean Hale (nee Woolison) in Victoria on October 26, 2022. She was born in Victoria on August 20, 1938. She will lovingly be remembered by her husband of 60 + years, Glen Hale, her children, Leanne (Chris) Rowand, and Steve (Lahni) Hale, her grandchildren Juliana and Katryna Hale, sister Joan (David) Skillings, niece Jennifer (Don) Illingworth, and nephews Chris (Alison) Skillings and Matthew Skillings. She will be missed by many other family and friends, too long a list to mention.

Barbie graduated from Vancouver General Hospital nursing school in 1959 and worked at the Royal Jubilee Hospital. She then hitch-hiked across Europe with two of her nursing friends. After travelling for a year, she returned to Victoria, met Glen on a skiing trip to Mt. Baker in 1961, and approximately a year later (September 29, 1962) they were married. They moved into their home built by Glen, in 1964.

In addition to her homemaker activities, she taught piano to her children and students, created and  maintained a lovely flower garden, processed goodies from their impressive vegetable garden, played church organ, golf, tennis and bridge, enjoyed regular dancing with Glen, family travels, hosting and attending family get togethers. Finally, she was very involved in St. Mary’s church activities.

A special thanks to the nursing team at Mt. St. Mary’s Hospital for providing exceptional care to Barbie during her residency and final days. And a heartfelt thank you to Reverend Ross Bliss, Vicar of Christ Church Cathedral in Victoria for providing Barbie with the Sacrament of Anointment on her final day.

A Memorial Service, with reception to follow, will be held at St. Mary’s Church, 1973 Cultra Avenue, Saanichton, on Saturday, November 19, 2022 at 11:00 am, with Venerable Dr. Lon Towstego officiating.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or charity of your choice.

Dear Mom/Barbara you will be forever missed. Your gentle spirit and loving heart touched all who knew

and loved you. We will forever hold you close.

I am so sorry to hear of Mrs. Hale‘s passing. She was my piano teacher from the age of 12 to 17. She was the most calm, gentle, patient person to have known and taken lessons from. She is the reason I continued to practice piano and came to enjoy it as a kid and now as an adult. I went to school with Steve and Leanne. My thoughts are with the family. May she Rest In Peace.

My deepest sympathy goes out to your family at the passing of dear Barb. I had the privilege of knowing Barb for over 40 years. I played tennis, golf and bridge with her. There was no one at Glen Meadows who was more loved and respected than Barb. She was a kind, gentle soul. In all those years I never heard her speak unkindly of anyone. Our world today needs more Barbs. Rest in peace my dear friend.
