It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of James (Jim) Black in his 97th year. Jim was born in Montreal to Agnes and James Black (predeceased). He was also predeceased by his brother Jack and eldest son, Ian. Jim’s first wife, Edna, (predeceased) was mother to his five children. He is survived by Diana, his wife and best friend, sister Moira, sons Alan and Fraser, daughters Daintry and Wendy and 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Jim had a good life and worked most of his career with The Molson Companies, 1949-1995 where he rose from auditor to Chairman of the Board. As well as serving on the boards of several other major corporations, he was Past Chairman of Petro-Canada and Canron Inc.
Jim held honorary doctorates from the University of New Brunswick, Wilfrid Laurier University and University of Calgary. He was also associated with many organizations including Junior Achievement, Pearson College of the Pacific and The Business Council on National Issues. He was past Chairman of The Niagara Institute, and the Canadian Manufacturers Association. He was a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants. He received an Order of Canada in 1989 reflecting a life devoted to business and to the betterment of all Canadians.
During his time in Victoria, he was a member of Uplands Probus Club and The Executive Resource Group and appreciated the visits from fellow members and friends during his illness.
Jim was a proud Canadian and to the end he remained humble and thankful for the opportunities life had afforded him. We shall miss his quirky sense of humour- and his smile. Rest well Jimmy, you have left a legacy reflected in the life you so willingly gave to the betterment of all.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 26, 2022 at 10:00am in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens Funeral Home, 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria, BC.

John Pittaway It is with great sadness I heard of Jim’s passing. As a brother in law married to Diane’s sister Denise we very rarely met only on occasions when Di and Jim made fleeting visits to England and at a later stage invited us to British Columbia Oak bay for a fortnight of enjoyment led by Jim’s desire to show us the sights of a beautiful country. I was greatly saddened to learn of the passing of a dear friend from our “younger” days.
We first met in early 1944, as 18 – year old R.C.A.F. Navigator trainees, near Belleville, Ontario – he from Verdun and I from Winnipeg.
Over the next two years of intensive education in the same course, across the country, culminating in coastal command crews, operating out of Patricia Bay (Victoria, BC), in early 1945.
Circumstances in May, 1945 and then in August, 1945, brought an end to our Air Force careers.
We returned to our respective homebases but connected in Montreal for several years when our civilian jobs took us there in 1951 – 54.
