Barbara Helen Ingram Glover (née Rogers)

Babs died of Covid-19 on the evening of September 6, 2022 at Veterans’ Memorial Lodge, Victoria, BC, following many visits with her family.

Born on Shirley Ranch in Nelson, BC, on March 3, 1935, Babs spent her early years there and later in the family home in the town of Nelson. As a teenager she moved with her family to Victoria, where she lived for most of her life. Babs studied for three years at Victoria College (later to become the University of Victoria) and worked in the offices of the Provincial Government. She travelled for 6 months in Europe with her sister Dorothy and their close friend Linda Gower (Maddaford). She met her husband to be, Ed, on a ferry to Salt Spring Island. There followed a courtship involving many outdoor adventures as well as dances and parties. Babs was deeply devoted to Ed and to her four sons. She made a safe, warm and welcoming home for her children and welcomed in their friends and eventually their partners and families. She had an especially powerful connection with her grandchildren, a connection that was abundantly clear right through her final days.

Babs was a lifelong outdoorswoman. She was Ed’s perennial fishing companion and his trusted canoeing partner. They paddled often on the rivers and lakes of Vancouver Island, on the sea coast of BC, and as far afield as the Green River in Utah. Babs proved tough on a challenging family backpacking trip to Effingham Lake in the 1970s, and was keen for a camping or canoe trip at almost any age. At age 80 she completed a ten-day backcountry canoe trip on the Green River with several of her family. Despite trouble with balance and strength during that trip, she made a heroic solo rescue of a tent that a sudden windstorm blew into the deep and swiftly flowing river, carrying with it sleeping bags, pads, clothing and personal gear. She waded in, towed the tent back to shore and waited, stuck in a mudflat, for her family to return from a hike. It was the difference between a disaster and an adventure. Fortunately most of her outdoor adventures were more peaceful than that one.

Babs was predeceased by her beloved husband of 45 years, Ed, in 2002. She is survived by her sons Rod (Jane Eert), Greg (Misuzu Kurauchi), Todd (Kelly Mae), Jason (Tonya), her grandchildren Shayla Wall (Raymond Wall), Celeste (Michael Barrodale), Railyn, Nicholas, and Nicole, her great-grandchildren Maddie and Kendra, and her sisters Sheila Harrison and Heather MacGregor and brother Patrick Rogers. She was predeceased by her sister Dorothy Bennett.

For their respectful, excellent and cheerful care over nearly 3 years, the Glover family thanks the nursing care team on unit A3 of Veterans’ Memorial Lodge. The Glover family is also very grateful to Colleen Dwinnell, who provided Babs with the kindest in-home care for several years before she moved to the Lodge. Finally, we offer our gratitude to her GP, Dr. Leah Norgrove, who over many years provided the highest quality of care to Babs and unfailing and deeply appreciated support to Rod.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Goward House, 2495 Arbutus Road, Victoria, BC on Saturday October 29th at 2:00 pm. Friends are invited during the event, if they wish, to speak a few words in memory of Babs. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in her name to Habitat Acquisition Trust or the Nature Conservancy of Canada.
