Joan died peacefully surrounded by her family on August 28, 2022 in Victoria, BC. Joan was born on February 18, 1930 in Swift Current Saskatchewan. She is predeceased by her loving husband of 57 years, Bill, in 2017. She is deeply missed by her 2 daughters Kathy (John) Withers and Beverly (Jim) Lynch; grandchildren Naomi (Jacob), Jacalyn (Jake), Micheal (Makayla), Madelin and Jodie, as well as her great grandson Riley. She is predeceased by her parents Bert and Rosa, brothers Billy and Bob, and survived by her sister Doreen Petch, sister-in-law Judy Hogg, nephews Mike (Bev), Ted (Carol) and Mark (Dorothy) and nieces Sandy and Pamela.
Joan grew up on a farm outside Swift Current in a loving family. She loved to run over the prairie fields under the prairie sky. She attended Regina Grey Nuns Hospital Nursing School and graduated in 1951. She was very proud of her Public Health Nursing career – working in a variety of communities meeting Bill in Smithers in 1958. They were married in 1960. They moved to Prince Rupert after having 2 girls and met a life long group of great friends there. They moved to Victoria in 1965. Joan loved golf and was a member of Uplands Golf Club for years even getting a hole in one on the 17th in her 81st year! Bill and Joan spent decades of summers on their boat “the Timaru” up in the warm waters of Desolation Sound meeting their various boating friends along the way. Joan treasured most her family and friends – of whom she had many.
In recent years, Berwick House became their home and the staff and residents there befriended and supported both her and my father. Her family wish to thank the Berwick staff and residents who meant so much to her. And finally, a thank you to Dr. Otto of Royal Jubillee Hospital who went above and beyond to compassionately care for her in her final week. Mum, we will miss you forever.
