“For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” Phil 1:26
On August 11, 2022, with his wife of 65 years, Johanna, at his side, Dirk gained his heart’s greatest desire: to be fully in God’s presence! Predeceased by son, Leonard (2012), & lovingly remembered by his children – Marilyn Van Boven (Lawrence), Johanna Lasell, Alice Duits (Berney), William Hordyk (Jackie), Richard Hordyk (Carla), Anita Stel (Patrick) and Sylvia Seibel (Kevin), his daughter-in-law, Sandi Hordyk, and 115 grandchildren/great-grandchildren.
His biggest legacy to his family and others was his whole-hearted devotion to the Lord Jesus, shown as he applied the truth of Scripture to his everyday life, and allowed the Holy Spirit to do His work in his heart. He and Johanna diligently passed that faith on to their children and we are carrying on that legacy to the future generations. Words cannot express the gratitude we feel for such a loving, steadfast, and faithful husband, father and (great) grandfather.
Dirk grew up in The Netherlands in a family with 5 brothers and two sisters, living in German-occupied Holland as a child, and went on to study electronics. He met and married Johanna there, and then, six months later, they immigrated to Edmonton. There Dirk (and a partner) started an electronics repair shop and he and Johanna were blessed with their first five children. In 1967, fed up with the Edmonton winters, Dirk and Johanna moved to Victoria. There they were blessed with another three children.
In March 1968, Dirk opened Atlas Stereo and TV, now owned and operated by his son, William, and still well-known for the integrity, honesty and incredible customer service he established. He served for many years on the board of Victoria Christian Reformed Church, Christ Community Church and Pacific Christian School. Over the years, he and Johanna also served their family and others in many ways, especially loving those on the fringes of society.
In their retirement years, Dirk and Johanna RV’d throughout BC and down to California. They loved being together. They continued to support and love their growing family. Even in sickness and old age, they continued to show love to each other and their family.
After Dirk was diagnosed with cancer in March 2021, he decided he wanted to see all of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren while he was still well enough. Through it all there was a consistent message from him to all of us: God is so good. Salvation through Jesus is of utmost importance. Keep on serving Him. Dirk was excited to see his Lord and Saviour, so we are very happy for him! Even so, we all miss him very, very much.
The family welcomes everyone to a service of remembrance on Saturday, August 27, at the Victoria Christian Reformed Church on 661 Agnes St., at 2 pm. To join us via livestream: https://youtu.be/993lAu-bxaA
