Thomas Edward Maxwell, 73, of Victoria, BC, passed away on February 24, 2022.

Thomas lived his life fully and loved others wholly even as he battled through cancer these last eight years. Thomas worked for 35 years with the provincial government, land surveying and later, as environmental stewardship officer with the Ministry of Environment. In his retirement, he found another true calling for 15 years as a Captain for Sea Fun Safaris and Eagle Wing Tours.

He was a loving husband to Linda, and an amazing father to Aaron, Chris, and Sarah, as well as to daughters-in-law Kwyn, Alaine, Christina, Malika, and Breanna and sons-in-law Segovia, Craig, and Rick. Thomas’ pride and joy were his grandchildren, Noah, Keaton, Zariyan, Preston, Grayson, Leo and Kylie. Thomas is survived by his sister Cathy and brother Jim and sister-in-law Donna as well as extended family.

The family would also like to thank the many healthcare providers that assisted Thomas.

A private celebration of life will be held for Thomas on Tuesday, March 8th at 2:00 p.m.  Guests may join the event virtually by clicking on the following link:

Tom was my coxswain at OBSR unit 33 .He was an incredible teacher sharing his love of the ocean and one of the best small boat handlers on the coast. That along with his great sense of humor made time on the water a wonderful experience. He made the world a better place and will be missed.

To a great friend, a wonderful neighbor, who shared with us beautiful sunsets at his condo, who showed us the distant snow-capped mountains from his window, and who took us out on whale-watching jaunts; we miss you dearly.

I met Tom when he first started whale watching. Tom and I had so many adventures together on board the Eaglewing fleet. I spent 6 years trying to get that hat off his head in all kinds of wind and seas. I was never successful in getting it off but came close a few times. Tom would look back at me on the helm with that look . Nice try! When we would head out of the harbour. Just as we would get up to speed. Tom would come up to the bridge. Not up stairs but up over the glass like a 70 year ninja cat. Say to me so what’s the plan? He didn’t like if I said I’m not sure yet. Or I don’t have one yet. He wonted it now. This was so he could talk to the guest and get them excited about our first stop for viewing. Omg with out fail. He would go tell the guests we are going to Race Rocks. I would get intel on whales the other direction. Not even able to go back to Race Rocks. This happens so many times it became I running joke between the two of us. Tom was my good friend. I will miss him but never forget him. My condolences to your family and all who new him. Tom May you have Fairwinds and following seas mate.

We started working together in the early sixties, Land Surveying. Lots of laughs, slashing salal on the west coast and slapping mosquitoes and black flies in Dease Lake and Atlin. I have a lovely picnic table on my sun deck made by Tom twenty years ago and still great.
Also some great whale watching trips with Tommy Joe.
    Great memories, Ted

Please accept my sincere condolences on the passing of Thomas. Having grown up with ‘Tommy’ I have a photo of attending what looks like Thomas’s 3rd b’day party at the Maxwell’s home. He is the only boy in attendance! Thomas and I crossed paths very occasionally over the years as I have with Jim and Cathy.
Please pass along my condolences to them as well.

My dear dear friend…..a true friend…..a drinking buddy. We sailed together, we played tennis together, we went to junior hockey games together….but best….we laughed together.
I truly miss you my buddy. Sail on Thomas….
