As my parents and the Caves were friends long before I was born, I had the opportunity to know Bill thru various stages of both our lives and to admire his many fine qualities over decades. He was always warm, kind, very funny , curious, well informed, clever, chivalrous, thoughtful and able to give valuable advice if asked. Bill was an exceptionally fine person and we were lucky to have had the chance to know him.

I have such fond memories of Dr. Cave – I was working at Amica Douglas House when he moved in. He was a great conversationalist, always interested in what other people had to say. My two dearest memories are firstly on the day he moved in, after the family left, he and I went out to the sidewalk in front of the building, I pointed out his room from the street, and we talked about how close his new residence was to the park and the ocean…. secondly, that winter we had quite a snowfall and Dr. Cave volunteered and spent many happy hours out in the back parking lot and on the sidewalks helping to clear the snow. I feel privileged to have known him. He was a wonderful man, and I send my sincere condolences to Jean and the family.

I’m thinking of Jean, and offer condolences to all of Bill’s family. While I only met Bill and Jean in Victoria in 2008, I felt like I had always known them. Bill was interested in people, active in the community and always had sparkle in his eyes. Together Bill and Jean were warm, fun and hospitable, a pleasure to be around. I loved seeing them walk hand-in-hand down Vancouver Street on their way to/from shopping. My father was at McGill medical school a couple of years behind Bill. Happily they met again in Victoria about eight years ago and hashed out old memories. I’m sorry this lovely gentleman is gone; I’ll remember him fondly.

I was very saddened to learn of Bill’s passing. During my time in the RCMP, I got to know the good Dr. on both a professional level and a bit on the personal level. I always enjoyed our association, even though it was usually under less than ideal circumstances. He was always congenial, ready to help and to enlighten in our mutual quest for evidence. He was an excellent Forensic Pathologist, teacher, a gentleman and a witty humourist. The world is a bit of a smaller place now that he is no longer with us.

    Please accept my heartfelt condolences.

    Herb LeRoy, Insp. (ret’d) RCMP

I lost touch with Dr. Cave after he left Vancouver and am very saddened to realize I will not have the opportunity to have another conversation with him. He was truly an exceptional individual! He has compiled a remarkable list of accomplishments and is an excellent example of a lifelong learner. He was so modest despite possessing a formidable intellect. He was also blessed with a remarkable sense of humor. Every encounter I had with him left me with a smile and a positive feeling. I think he had that effect on everyone. I am richer and wiser for having known him. By example he taught me a lot about life. On a lighter note, I can’t miss this chance to remind Dr. Cave one more time how much he looked like Jim Phelps on the original Mission Impossible television series! I want to express my sincere condolences to Jean and the rest of his family and to assure them they will be in my thoughts. Warren Murschell

As a forensic pathologist, Bill Cave was frequently a witness of mine when I prosecuted murder cases. I was always pleased when I saw his name on the police file. He was invariably a great witness. No nonsense, clear spoken. Easy for any jury to understand. A real professional. And, on a personal level a very likable man.
Condolences to his family. RIP Bill.
