A life well-lived.  Daryl passed away after a short illness at Veteran’s Memorial Lodge.  He was born in Victoria, BC the fourth child of Fearon and Mabel Woodburn (Brewster).  He outlived his beloved wife of 67 years Beverley (McRae), his brothers Raymond and Clyde, and sister Darlaine. He is survived by older sister Joyce Harris, sons Layne (Nancy), Scott, Robert (Linda), daughter Shannon and daughter-in-law Susan. He leaves behind nine wonderful grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.  Dad grew up in Vic West, and left school early to join the war effort, then served in the Canadian Army infantry 1943-1946.

He joined the Victoria Fire Department in 1946, attaining the rank of Assistant Chief, retiring in 1982.  Daryl also spent over 20 years as the chief candymaker for Rogers Chocolates, was an accomplished farmer, and later became an impressive artist.  Our Dad spent many happy hours in retirement enjoying family, golfing with friends and taking numerous wonderful cruises and travelling with his bride Beverley.  He was an amazing father.  Daryl and Beverley especially enjoyed their beloved grandchildren and seeing their lives unfold and blossom, and were thrilled and proud to become great-grandparents.

Our Dad always looked out for “the other guy” and gained many friendships in the process over his long and full life.  He will be sorely missed by family and friends.  A million thanks to the brilliant staff at The Lodge, especially Sarah, Jason, and Bindu amongst many others, and a special thanks to Rosamond for bringing out the hidden artist we did not know existed.

A Memorial  Service for our parents was held on Saturday, November 27, 2021 at 2:00 PM in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria B.C.  A recording of the service can be viewed by clicking the image below. Condolences may be offered to the family below.

My late husband, Daryl Woodburn , adored his grandmother Mabel, and he said it was his Aunt Beverly who comforted him in his time of sorrow over the loss of his beloved grandmother. Aunt Bev’s kindness and compassion was never forgotten by him. We attended the happy family reunions that were hosted by Aunt Bev and Uncle Daryl over the years, where I came to appreciate their loving hospitality and generosity. I offer my heartfelt condolences to their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

    Layne and family.
I am so sorry for the loss of your Dad. Even though I had not seen Daryl and Bev for many years, I still think about 785 Hampshire Road and the wonderful, safe and happy times we had there, including your family as our great next door neighbours. I know my Mum and Dad really enjoyed their company. I remember listening to the laughter from the kitchen where my Mum, your Mum, Elaine and Phyllis would gather for morning coffee while the Dads were at work. If I’m not mistaken I think our parents got together for bridge. I remember your Dad as a lovely, kind, and handsome gentleman. Thinking of you all.
