It is with great sadness and broken hearts that the family announces the passing of José Antonio Ferreira Matias. He died peacefully at home in the arms of God surrounded by his family. José left behind his beloved wife Maria do Carmo, 3 daughters; Paula(Ed), Graci(Marc) & Susie, and 3 grandchildren; Chase, Adriana & Chyanne. He will be immensely missed by many relatives and friends near and far.
José was born and raised in Ponta Garça on the beautiful island of Saõ Miguel, Açores and migrated to Canada in his early adult life to work as a highly-skilled, creative and talented mason and to build a future with his wife. His strength, courage and passion for life enabled him to always succeed. He was an extremely hard worker, an excellent family provider, a loyal and caring husband, a loving father & grandfather and a trustworthy, reliable friend with a great sense of humour. A respectable man. He loved family gatherings, gardening and being an active member of the Portuguese community where he spent a lot of time enjoying the company of his close friends and continuing to maintain Portuguese traditions. After a resilient and courageous battle with cancer, at 81 years of age, Jose’s calling came to move on to a place of no pain where only beauty and freedom exist. He will remain alive forever in the hearts of those who loved him, in the blessing of memories and in the fruits of his hard labour that he left behind. Now in God’s hands may he Rest In Peace.
A service will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 4635 Elk Lake Drive, Victoria, on Monday, October 4th, 2021 at 11:00 am followed by a procession to Royal Oak Burial Park, 4673 Falaise Drive, Victoria.
The family would like to thank all of the doctors and nurses who cared for José over the past few years as well as the staff at Red Cross, Palliative Care Nurses and Hospice Care Team for their amazing support and kindness during the end stage of his life. They would also like to thank all of the family and friends that have sent flowers, food and provided love and support throughout and especially during this very difficult time.
Condolences may be offered to the family below.

He will always be remembered for his love of the outdoors, whether it be in the garden with family, out crabbing on the dock or even catching clams on Salt Spring Island. His smile, laughter and constant humour at all the family gatherings will be forever missed. These were great times that will not soon be forgotten. Wishing we could be there in this time of sorrow.…..
