In his early years he left his birth country Scotland, and travelled to many parts of the world, like Hong Kong, Australia to name a few. Grief is the price we pay for love – Queen Elizabeth II on 20 Nov 2001

This was one of Uncle Douglas’s favourite quotes that he kept written on a card with his most cherished things. May he now be restored to full health and reunited with Uncle Wilson, family and friends in Heaven. RIP

  • James Lew

A genuine and caring person, Uncle Doug would always ask how my parents and brother sister were. For Ellen and myself he would later finish the conversation with, “Look after one another”.

We take comfort in these words and the memories he left behind.

We take solace knowing that all the relationships he built are not lost.

    Thank you Uncle Doug.

To all those who loved Uncle Doug, I offer my condolences. Let’s share our happy memories of Uncle Doug with each other. I also offer my heartfelt thanks to those who took care of him after Uncle Wilson’s passing, especially Uncle Ephrem, Emily, Mia and Nikko. I’m sorry that distance prevented me from helping.

Uncle Doug was very special to me. It didn’t matter that we lived in different countries. Whenever we met, it was like no time had passed. We kept in touch via telephone and letters/cards. He hated writing letters but he sent me postcards from all around the world. He loved travelling. My parents, James and I enjoyed holidays with him and Uncle Wilson in places like Macau, Bali, Indonesia, Alaska, Las Vegas, the West Coast of the USA, New Zealand and many parts of Australia, not to mention Hong Kong and Canada when he and Uncle Wilson were living there.

In 1966 when my family lived in HK for a few months when I was only 10 months old, and then later in the mid-70s, he baby sat me and my brother Ralph and gave me my most-treasured childhood soft toy. As I grew up, whenever we went out to dinners, we always sat together and if it was a Chinese banquet, he would give me his abalone and dessert and I would give him my ginger and spring onions! That’s the kind of relationship we had. If he was doing a crossword puzzle in Melbourne and didn’t know the answer, he would ring me to see if I could help.

I feel very blessed that he and Uncle Wilson started coming to Melbourne every summer, as it gave us all extra time to spend together and enjoy each other’s company. I will miss Uncle Doug greatly but I am glad that he will now be reunited in Heaven with Uncle Wilson, my parents (Joanna and Les), his parents (Bessie and Harry), his sister (Margaret) and other loved ones.

Thank you, Uncle Doug, for your love, kindness, support and friendship. You have left me with lots of happy memories and were a wonderful “Uncle” to me. Take care up there!
