Much loved daughter, mom, grandma & Bok Bok (great-grandmother). Born Oct 1931 in Hong Kong and passed Jan 2021 in her 90th year.

Pre-deceased by her mother (1943), her father (1983 at 100 years), her husband (1964), her son (2011). Survived by her daughter Margaret (Gordon); daughter-in-law, Bjorg; granddaughters: Monica (Chad) and Melissa (Myke); grandsons: Eric (Nikita), Jordan, Zachary (Mark) and Adam; great-grandchildren: Callum Kenneth (4 years) and Penelope June (2 years).

June Show Kum Yan was the youngest of 4 siblings. She met her husband, Dennis (Lee Kai Soon), when she was 20 and he 23.  After a short courtship, they got engaged before he immigrated to Victoria, BC, Canada in 1951.  Her fiancé returned to Hong Kong in 1955;  they got married & had their firstborn, Ken.  They had all moved to Canada by 1958 where their daughter, Margaret was born in 1960.

In 1964, shortly after being diagnosed with cancer, June’s husband, Dennis passed. Leaving her with 2 young children.

In 1973, June’s father (90 years) moved from Hong Kong to Victoria to live with her until his passing in 1983.

In 2011, June was deeply saddened by the unexpectedly passing of her firstborn, and only son, Ken.  In time, she was very blessed to welcome 3 grandsons-in-law, Chad, Myke & Mark, as well as a granddaughter-in-law, Nikita, and great-grandchildren Callum Kenneth and Penelope June.

June is remembered as a hard-working, gracious, welcoming, lovely lady.  She was a dynamo who always seemed to be working 2-3 jobs at a time (both part-time & full-time) – this lasted until she was in her late 60’s.

What little free time she had, June enjoyed mah jong with her numerous friends at their homes or clubs. She also enjoyed cooking special Chinese meals & treats for her family & friends.

June passed peacefully into the arms of her Lord Jesus on Wednesday, January 27, 2021.

Dear Margaret, Gordon, Bjorg, and family,

Your mom was such a lovely and gracious lady. She will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. I will cherish our talks over a cup of tea.
Here are some of my memories that I would like to share with you:

    – Her great knitting skills. My daughter got blessed with a pink dinosaur sweater that we both count as a family heirloom to be passed along. Apparently, June’s coworkers used to plead with her to make them Cowichan sweaters.

    – Her ability should not be under-estimated based on her size or youthful looks. Once when she applied for a job, the hiring supervisor thought she was ‘just a kid’. Her friend that recommended her laughed and said she’s older than she looks and she’s old enough to have a child. The supervisor wasn’t sure but decided to take her on an on-trial basis. She surpassed expectations and proved she was smart. In time, the ‘kid’ was promoted from dishwasher to salad maker to cook.

    – Her generous and compassionate heart. She once said that she wished she could give more to charity.
She related a story about 2 children going to the store with empty pop bottles. They were so excited and picked out treats they planned to buy. When the second child put his bottles on the counter, some toppled over and smashed. The child was heartbroken. June paid the boy for the broken bottles so he could still have his treat.

Another fact that spoke to June’s heart was the fact that she did not hesitate to take in and care for her elderly father even when she had other siblings who could do so. At this time, June was already a widow with 2 young children and was working multiple jobs.

She related these 2 stories not to boast of her kindness but to say that she did what she could.

Jesus is so pleased to welcome home one of His most precious jewels.

Love from Sarah who was June blessed.

June was a most loved friend of the McNutt family. The friendship began with Robert and June working together in foodservice.
