With great sadness, we announce the unexpected passing of our beloved son, Michael Jon, in Victoria, far too early at the age of 56 with so much more to offer to this earth.

Survived by his grieving parents, Linda and Tom, brother Tom Jr. (Rachel) nephews Mark, Austin and niece Linda Ana, his favourite uncle Alfred, and Rhonda, Michael’s partner of many years. Michael will also be dearly missed by his many aunts, uncles and cousins all of whom loved his wonderful, infectious charm, intelligence, wit and warmth.

Michael’s passion from an early age was aviation. He gained his private pilot’s license at 16 years of age. Beginning his career at age 13 as a part-time “ramp rat” with Air West in the inner harbour, he advanced with what became Air BC to ground management positions in Victoria, Prince George, Calgary and Edmonton. Countless friends and colleagues loved his sense of humour and respected and admired his management skills and ability to bring people together. Michael’s, career highlight, in which he took great pride, was with BC Emergency Health Services where his dedication and leadership were well recognized. His final position was Director, Aviation Provincial Programs.

Goodbye, our darling son, may you rest in eternal peace.

There will be a celebration of life announced at a future date.

Donations to the SPCA https://www.spca.bc.ca/branches/victoria/

or the Wild Arc Foundation in Michael’s memory would be gratefully appreciated.

Condolences may be offered to the family at www.mccallgardens.com.

    Dear Linda, Tom, and Tommy,
I just want to add a little note here to say I’m thinking of you so much, and my heart goes out to you all. I hope these memories are a bit of healing for you on this difficult journey. My time with Michael was so many years ago (elementary school!) but the fun we had playing together & exploring the woods near our homes are among my most vivid and treasured memories growing up. Michael set the bar high on future friendships, that’s for sure! I remember him as fiercely loyal (no bully could get near me when he was around) and full of mischief, which suited me! As the youngest in our families, we learned how to stay under the radar, which gave us lots of room for shenanigans. He was always so sweet to me… and we were confidants and could chat away for hours. I even remember some of those conversations, so funny! I think I was a very lucky little girl indeed to have that friendship. Michael and your family will always have a special place in my heart.
    Love and hugs, Catriona

I had the pleasure of being in the same “Career Exploration” course as Mike, during Grade 10 at Cedar Hill Jr. Secondary. While my 3 month experience at Ray’s Sporting Goods came and went, I always admired Mike for taking his experience and creating a life-long career. Years after graduating high school, I would see Mike down on the inner harbour and exchange greetings. I have very fond memories of Mike as being happy and a lot of fun during classes. My condolences to his family and everyone who knew him.

  • Steve Bogie

    Linda & Tom:

Please accept my deepest condolences during this difficult time, but know that Mike was a kind and generous person with an incredible thirst for life which he shared with all he came in contact with.
I had the pleasure of working with Mike at AirBC and spent many years enjoying his company and companionship as we worked, laughed, grew and learned along the way.
He will be missed by those touched along the way.

Thank you my friend, rest in peace.

    Linda and Tom,

I was so saddened to hear about the passing of your son, Michael. Although I never had the pleasure of meeting him, I heard many stories through Linda at her dental appointments. He sounded like an amazing man that I wish I had the pleasure of meeting. I know how much you both loved and cherished him and know I am thinking of both of you during this sad time. Love to you both.

  • Jamna Sharma

To Mike’s family, please accept my sincere condolences on his passing. The first time we met was in 2009 with the BC Ambulance Service and there was a mutual friendship that formed instantaneously. He was a genuinely caring person and had the gift of making you feel like you were his best friend. His smile was as huge as his heart and he has left a terrible void in all our lives but especially in that of his family. You raised a wonderful person! May you feel proud of the man he was and the happiness he brought to all he touched! RIP Mike…I will remember your smile and your bear hugs with fondness always!

Tom, Linda, and Michael’s family and friends,

What a shock it was for Deborah and me to learn of Michael’s untimely death, so we can only guess what sadness you must be experiencing, and our hearts are with you.

Michael was full of life, full of fun, and a great guy to be around. He will be missed, but he will be remembered.

We only wish we can give you a hug, reminisce, and remind each other how precious our time on earth is, and how precious our time with our loved ones is as well.

  • Paul Leslie

My heartfelt condolences on the loss of a son, brother and partner. Mike was absolutely one of the good guys. We saw some great times and some tough times at BCAS. We had many a great conversation and his sense of humour was always front and center and you alway felt good after chatting with Mike. I last saw him at YYJ in January and, after not having seen each other in about 5 years, rather than shake my hand he greeted me with a giant bear hug. To me that typified just who he was. Rest in peace Mike.

  • Jocelyn Gifford

We have been neighbours across the street for 10 years. My husband Bill Foster cared a lot about Mike, considered him a good friend and would have been devastated by his death. I remember Mike’s and Rhonda’s very kind words to me when Bill died last summer. Close family relationships with their ups and downs really define our lives, so it is an incredibly painful shock when suddenly your loved one is gone.
My deepest sympathy to Rhonda and all of Mike’s family. Another good man is gone. In my experience, those who are left are sustained by remembering his love, appreciating all the good times you shared and valuing what he taught you in your time together.
    With love,

  • Saby Higgin

Oh Linda – my heartfelt condolences.

Sending my sincere condolences to the Essery Family and friends of Mike. I was a classmate of Mike’s at Cedar Hill and Mt. Doug. I have fond memories of Mike. He always had a big smile and a contagious laugh. I last saw Mike at the 30 yr. high school reunion and he was the same fun guy. He touched many lives.

  • BRENT MONKS

    To the Essery Family,
Maryann and I pass our deepest condolences. When I worked with him, Michael was a bright star in the Air bc sky. I was fortunate enough to become a friend and enjoyed many a fun time either on a golf course, a houseboat in Penticton or elsewhere. Always the brightest light in the room. His love for aviation was in his blood. Besides his family, it is what brought the biggest smile on his face. It was with genuine sadness we learned of his passing. Grief is the price we pay for love.
Please accept our warmest thoughts during this time.

  • Marna Beech

    To Linda, Tom and Family
I was saddened to hear the news. Mike was a great boss in BCEHS – Aviation and always cheerful and smiling. Always had time for you. He loved his job SO much and wanted everyone to know as much as we could about BC Ambulance and even arranged a flight for me at Stn 280, when the Finance/Admin clerks were allowed ,(flight cancelled over Vancouver) but the excitement of being up there with the paramedics was incredible.. He encouraged visiting Dispatch and learning all about them. He was very social and fun to be around and his heart was in right place. Your flying high now.

  • Kim McGowan

Linda and Tom, how very shocking to read this news. My condolences to all your family, but especially to you two. There is no greater loss than the loss of a child. A meditation was left for me at on point, a quote from The Prophet, “When you are sorrowful, look again into your hearts and you will see that, in truth, you are weeping for that which has been your delight.”

  • Bart and Bozena Christenson

    Tom/Linda, Tom Jr. and Rhonda,

Bozena and I send you our deepest condolences. Mike was my best friend and a brother to me for over 40 years. We were there for each other through good times and bad and our friendship never wavered. The laughter and joy we shared throughout these many years will always be in our hearts and minds. Mike was truly one of the great ones.

  • Sean Steele

I am shocked and saddened to hear about Mike. I met Mike when we both worked at BCAS (I was in HR). I was a private pilot as well and have such fond memories of “ hangar flying” with Mike through the years (never on company time, of course, cough, cough). Much too young to have “slipped the surly bonds of earth”…Mike will be missed.

  • Michael Butler

    Tom Linda and Rhonda:

My heartfelt condolences for the loss of your son and partner Michael. He was a lovely man with a big heart and even bigger soul. I have so many fond memories of working with Mike and relying on his great sense of humour to get us through the workday. I first met Mike in the early 90’s when I moved my office to the south terminal at YVR and set up shop across the hallway from Mike at Telus air operations. We were separated by a large glass window and Mike wasted no time introducing himself and was full of questions about BC Air Ambulance operations. When we lost PUN in in January 1995 Mike offered to help in any way he could and he very quickly became my go to source for information on the many aviation terms and regulations that we were processing post crash. Mike initiated and organized, with Telus’s blessing, the use of their aircraft to ferry BCAS personnel, politicians and Ministry of Health Officials to Vancouver and back for the huge memorial serice held at YVR. I was so grateful for Mike’s help during that tragic time and proud that we were able to bring him over to Air Ambulance a few years later. Mike’s spirit will live on and he will never be forgotten.

Kathy and my thoughts and hearts go out to you upon reading of your dear
Mike’s passing. I first got to know Mike of course during our ‘pioneer’ days with AirBC. Golly, we were both just ‘kids’ ! He was a most dedicated person and great ambassador for the airline. Always a smile always friendly, always ready step in and be of help. I know that his fellow workers at BC Ambulance would have similar words of praise and respect.
    Fond regards, Graeme

and I am sure he felt and knew it.
Sending all of my love and will be lighting a candle each night for you and your family.I cannot wait to be able to share some of our uproarious laughter in the not too distant future.I feel sure that Michael would like to hear you laugh.
    Lovingly,

Reflecting on life, we note the angels. Mike was one of them. I was lucky he moved across the street and became part of the same neighbourhood gaggle. Playing kick the can, lawn darts and wrecking neighbours lawns, we laughed on carefree summer evenings together. Mike was a deep and intelligent person that grew into the good looking guy with the hot car and the cool friends. He was fun and popular and would do anything for anyone. I will never forget listening to Boston in his living room for the first time….and pre-car, walking up Doncaster so many times while he made me laugh. Mike knew what he wanted and pursued his aviation career from such an early age. I am so proud of him. He was loved by all and so kind and fun. I will miss that angel.

  • Linda Ball

    Linda and Tom,

    You will be missed.

  • Kalani Polson

Sincere condolences from all of us at BC Air Ambulance. Mike was an integral part of our team since 2003, and I feel privileged to call him a colleague and personal friend for the last decade and a half. He was always positive and upbeat and so deeply committed to our operation. He really, genuinely cared. He made massive improvements to AirEvac safety in BC, introducing requirements for aircraft, technology, training and pilot qualifications far and above those required by regulation. Government procurement rules make achieving that a daunting task, but Mike was always up to the task.

Mike came to BCAS in 2003, in a time of turmoil after we had lost a Lear and all souls in 1995, followed by another crash in 2002 that totalled the aircraft. Right as he came aboard, the contracted fixed wing carrier went bankrupt. Mike navigated all of that and I have no doubt that in the process he saved many lives…our lives. On top of that he was just such a great guy. I’ll miss ya Mike..you were one of the great ones!
