Fiona was born in China to her late mother, Yat Han Chin, and her father, Hong Yew Chin on August 4th, 1925. As a teenager, she moved to Hong Kong and later became an elementary school teacher. She married a fellow teacher and raised a family, before immigrating to Canada with her husband in 1967 and settling in Victoria, B.C. Building a new life in a new country, she started working at Paul’s Motor Inn & Restaurant and as well became a beloved teacher at the Victoria Chinese Public School, culminating in more than 30 years of hard work. During that time, she developed a lifetime of friendships with colleagues as well as with students. She spent her free time going out with her many of these friends for lunches, nightly mahjong games and travelling around the world. She even found time in her fun-filled life knitting sweaters for all her grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and teaching them all her skills.

Fiona quietly departed this life on April 27th, 2020 at 10:45 pm at Glenwarren Lodge Long Term Care Home in Victoria, B.C. We are forever grateful for the wonderful care team that took care of her this past year and took even more loving care of her during the last couple of months when we as a family could not be there for her.

She was predeceased by her husband Gary and son-in-law, York Ming Shum and is survived by her daughter Anne, brothers Dennis (Susan) and Sam (Eva), three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, five nieces and nephews, and many extended family who will miss her dearly.  Condolences may be offered to the family below.
