A Lesson in Grace
On the morning of December 17, 2019, Eve Bruce-Lockhart passed peacefully, with extraordinary grace and dignity surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Eve had the humblest of beginnings, growing up in a three-room farmhouse during the great depression in Northern Manitoba, with seven brothers and a sister, and then three additional adopted brothers.
A battle with Childhood Polio left her paralyzed in a chair, the only medical option required her father to hitch the sled and horses to take her to the monastery to be bathed in salts, and a year later watching her siblings play, she simply decided it was time to get up and join them.
This resolve is something that was evident throughout her life. Despite significant challenges, Eve never let anything stand in her way from doing what she believed were the right things to support her family and friends. She left Manitoba under difficult circumstances, landing in Sudbury where she established her independence and developed a successful career as a model. It was there that she met Paddy, her husband of 46 years, and together raised a family of 6 children.
Anytime there was fundraising to be done, for a school, a youth orchestra, hockey team, senior’s group or the charity of her choice, she was the first to lead from the front, and challenged everyone to commit their energy to support the initiative. Her desire was always to create better opportunities for everyone.
There was never a sign on the Bruce-Lockhart door that said no vacancy. Support for the friend in need, and for the underdog at their lowest moment came with little hesitation whether that was a ride, a meal, a supportive ear, or a place to stay. Her incredible strength showed in ways that never ceased to amaze, whether it meant no freezing for dental work, or the direct, invaluable message that getting a job meant going down to the yard every morning with your work boots on.
She put family first and would drop everything to drive or fly across the country to help her parents, siblings, nieces, nephews, children and grandchildren, all of whom she loved profoundly. Above all, she loved to be with family, playing music, a spirited game of cards, and knew how to raise a glass of bubbly to toast us all.
She leaves behind an incredible legacy of perseverance, determination, kindness and generosity of spirit. She will be sorely missed and lovingly celebrated.
There will be two services for Eve:
December 29, 2019 at 3:30 pm at St. Nicholas the Wonderworker Ukrainian Catholic Church, 1112 Caledonia Avenue, Victoria, B.C. with reception to follow.
June 6, 2020 at 11:00 am at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Toutes-Aides Manitoba, and following the burial, a reception in Rorketon Community Hall.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to either: Eve Bruce-Lockhart Bursary, Victoria Conservatory of Music, 900 Johnson Street, Victoria, B.C. V8V 3N4 or In Memory of Eve Bruce-Lockhart, Laurentian University Advancement office, P-227, 935 Ramsey Lake Road, Sudbury, Ontario P3E 2C6
