Ellen was born on December 12, 1946 in Assiniboia, Saskatchewan and she passed peacefully after a brief illness on November 15, 2019 at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria. Ellen was predeceased by her parents, Ray and Cecile Slough. She is survived by her brother Don Slough (Leslie Speirs); their children Matthew, Andrew and Kristy; and a great nephew Owen in whom she delighted.
After graduation from the University of Saskatchewan, Ellen worked as a probation officer in Vancouver and Victoria, ultimately running the Victoria probation office. Ellen’s deep commitment to social justice led her to treat all people with respect and compassion. Early in Ellen’s retirement, she travelled extensively. In later years, she played bridge and read voraciously. Ellen remained immersed in politics particularly of the N. D. P. variety.

A Memorial Service and Reception will be held at James Bay United Church on Tuesday, November 19, 2019 at noon.

Boolie Stead I am very sorry to hear the news of Ellen’s death which I just heard today at James Bay Duplicate Bridge Club. I was a neighbour of Ellen’s before she moved to Douglas Street and played bridge at James Bay for many years. She was a great bridge partner and neighbour and a very kind person.
My husband, Barry, and I send our condolences to all of her family.

James Ellen was a wonderful, if all too brief addition at our building (Bickerton Court) and I think I speak for many other owners who always loved to both greet and be greeted by her in passing, in our lobby. I’m very sorry for her loss and my condolences go out to her friends and of course family.

Marilyn Preston First met Ellen at Family and Youth Court on cook Street across from Royal Athletic Park. It was a small court . I was a Trial Coordinator and a Justice of the Peace.I had a lot of respect for Ellen and how she communicated to youth and their counsel.Eventually the government of the day closed the courthouse and we were moved into the main courthouse on Burdett. Not the same atmosphere but the same people still worked together.
Ellen was respected by counsel, court staff and clients.I’m sure she had a positive impact on her clients and sure she will be missed by family and friends.. she was a wonderful person.
