Eirlys John (born January 28, 1926 in Skewen, Wales, UK) gracefully died at the Hospice at the Royal Jubilee Hospital on February 26, 2019. Eirlys survived her husband, Dr. William Allan John, by almost 14 years living gloriously by the ocean in Victoria which she loved and enjoying the moderate climate which Victoria offers. Eirlys was an inveterate cruise goer enjoying many cruises with Allan and then instilling the desire to have adventures on the high seas in her children and grandchildren. Eirlys greeted the cruise season in Victoria with great pleasure watching from her balcony at Amica as the cruise ships came and went.
Eirlys is survived by her four children, Nicholas David John (and her grandchildren, Natasha, Jacob, Cameron and Traci and her great grandchildren, Hadley, Brynn, Carlie and Reece), Sarah Undeg John and her husband, Paul (and her grandchild, Myfanwy), Richard Ieuan John and his wife, Susan (and her grandchildren, Stephanie and Julia) and Katie Victoria John (and her grandchildren, Daniel, Alysia and Savanna and her great grandchildren, Ariele, Avery, Hudson and Bensyn).
Eirlys’ family wishes to thank the staff at Amica Somerset House, along with the staff from Home Care Assistance and particularly, Flor Abuleras. They were instrumental in allowing Eirlys to live the last year of her life with the least disruption.
Please join Eirlys’ family for a Funeral Service and Celebration of Eirlys’ Life followed by a reception in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive in Victoria, BC on this Saturday the 2nd day of March, 2019 at 9:30 am. The service will be officiated by The Rt. Rev. Dr. Charles Wm. Dorrington.
Eirlys’ family would ask that no flowers be provided and any donations made in Eirlys’ honour be made to Victoria Hospice Society.

Sandra Wells Eirlys was my older sister and my rock. When our mother died young she and Allan along with brother Leighton and sister in law Grace as well as brother Ieuan and sister in law May helped my father by looking after me aged 8. She was instrumental in insisting I attended good schools and kept in close touch by letter when she lived in Sheffield and Nottingham where I joined them for periods. They were so delighted when their children Nicholas, Sarah, Richard and Katie came along. Their joy as parents was palpable. In later years while she lived in Victoria I stayed a week. She enjoyed reminiscing about her early years when she lived with our grandmother Mamo and Mamo’s sister Aunty Lucy. It was the latter she attributed to doing so well in education and the reason she was accepted at grammar school. Eirlys took the trouble to send me a a history of the Wells family’s distant relations which I intend passing on to the remaining members. Eirlys, it’s so hard to be without you but there is joy in knowing you had a wonderful life with Allan, loved your children and grandchildren unreservedly and travelled extensively. Robert Wells Auntie Eirlys was the loved Matriarch of the Welsh Wells family. She was always interested in the achievements & tribulations of her Welsh “tribe,” making an effort to attend the weddings & funerals, until she was too infirm to do so.
Eirlys is still remembered fondly by her friends & their offspring in the Skewen & Neath area of Wales, where she was born, educated & started her first employment. She was born in Dynevor Road Skewen, educated at Skewen’s Coedffranc Junior School, passed her scholarship to Neath Girls’ Grammar School, where she received her Secondary education & was a comptometer operator for BP Llandarcy, near Skewen. A comptometer was the first commercially successful key-driven mechanical calculator. It was in Neath that she met the love of her life, Allan John & the rest is history.
Our Mum Grace Wells, Eirlys’s late brother Leighton’s wife, remembers with great joy her times with Uncle Allan & Auntie Eirlys, in particular the wonderful holidays spent in Canada, USA, Mexico & Ireland.
We shall miss you Auntie Eirlys & never forget you.

roger hemeon A note to express our condolences to Eirlys’ family on her passing. We were neighbours and friends for many years when living at Wedgwood. We shared good times and other times together. As we both left, the contact was limited but one always came away feeling better after seeing her. Our deepest sympathy to all .
